Desserts for Kings

Since September, a small group of Year 10 students, most of whom are studying GCSE Food Technology, have been working towards a competition which culminates at Venturefest Yorkshire 2005.

Pupils have been involved in researching local foods, such as the now deceased Knaresborough cherry industry, writing, distributing and analysing the results of a questionnaire throughout the school, and of course, much eating and food production!

The group found that although many people liked to eat desserts, they were (correctly!) perceived to be too unhealthy to eat regularly. The team set about trying to reproduce popular desserts lower in both fat and sugar content but still retaining flavour and appeal. As a result they developed 2 such sponge puddings for the Christmas market - Mulled Cranberry and Almond pudding and Saucy Chocolate pudding. Despite having reduced fat and sugar contents, these puddings still taste fantastic! The group have also just completed developing an ice cream containing half the calories of a standard equivalent.
