This event is a time when the PE department
celebrates and recognises the performances of KJS
students by presenting them with various awards.
Although we recognise sporting success
by awarding players of the season, area and county
colours, we also recognise those students who have
shown commitment, dedication and improvement in sports
by awarding them School Colours at Year 8, Year 11
and Year 13.
This year we were pleased to welcome
Mr Colin Cooper (former player Middlesborough
FC, now a coach) as our guest speaker. We were also
joined by a record breaking, 165 students and their
proud parents and the Chaloner Hall was packed.
It was a very enjoyable evening and
I would like to thank all parents, staff and students
for making it such a memorable occasion.
Highlights
of the Year
- Crosscountry - Traditionally
crosscountry means PE teachers bribing students
to run for the school! This year it was different.....the
inter boys team (Alex Bell, Alex McFarlen, Joe Knowlson,
Matt Potter and Alex Long), coached by Mr Hall had
arrived. It started in Thirsk, went to Whitby, and
finished in Leeds, and I was hooked! The team finished
5th in the Countries National Event. They were the
first placed school from the north of England, and
the first placed school which wasn't a grammar or
private school which always feels good.
- Year 10 Netball
- April and the end of the netball season, and the
Year 10 team (traditionally Mrs Cooper's team but
whilst she was on maternity leave, I fostered them
for a short while) had been well drilled. In the
Area tournament, Year 10 beat every team but drew
with Harrogate Grammar (who had also beaten all
other teams). After a nail biting wait for both
teams, we found out that we had lost on goal difference.
We were gutted after playing so superbly!! The girls
learntthat night that sport can be cruel. I learnt
that saying Joint 1st sounded better than 2nd.
- Astro Turf - After
two years of pestering Dr Hudson said KJS could
have an Astro Turf. Thanks to all parents and students
who took time to write letters to the governors
and Dr Hudson. This is going to be a wonderful addition
to PE at KJS.
- Jenny Lumley - In
July whilst I was teaching a rounders lesson, for
the first and probably only time, a student came
to tell me that they had received a letter inviting
them to represent their country; this was Jenny
Lumley. In the same month Dr Hudson confirmed that
Jenny could be appointed as PE Technician from September.
Overnight Jenny found herself going from wearing
her GB tracksuit to washing KJS's Year 7 boy's football
kit!!
