King James's has been
designated a Training School by the DfES until
2009.
The aim of Training Schools
is to act as a centre of excellence and spread
good practice in the initial training of teachers
(ITT). Funding provided by the DfES allows us
to appoint staff as well as enhance our ICT
provision and equip our innovative Classroom
of the Future. It also involves the school in
a whole range of national initiatives such as
the use of Advanced Skills
Teachers (ASTs) in ITT and the running of
Taster Conferences
on behalf of the Teacher Training Agency for
people interested in taking up teaching as a
career.
King James's takes 25-30 trainee teachers
each year. Most of these trainees come from
The University of Leeds, but we also have
partnerships with several other Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs) including Leeds Metropolitan
University, The University of Huddersfield,
The Open University, Leeds Trinity and All
Saints and Sheffield Hallam University.
Every department in King James's is involved
in ITT. One teacher in each department is the
subject Mentor who
works closely with trainees and monitors their
teaching.
We have a comprehensive weekly Educational
and Professional Studies (EPS)
programme for trainees, and provide guidance
for trainees completing their HEI
Tasks.
