Geography

Head of Department:Mr S Keeble

At King James’s School, we inspire students to think like geographers—to explore the world with curiosity, awe, and a sense of responsibility. Our aim is to foster a deep passion for both the physical and human aspects of geography, encouraging students to understand their place in the world from local to global scales.

Our curriculum is designed to help students make meaningful connections between topics, develop critical thinking skills, and build the knowledge and confidence to pursue geography further in education and careers. We regularly update our content to reflect our changing world and encourage students to stay informed through current events.

Fieldwork is a vital part of our approach. Students across all key stages engage in local fieldwork.

At Key Stage 3, students study a broad range of physical, human, and environmental geography topics, carefully sequenced to build skills and understanding. Geography is a popular and successful subject at GCSE, where students explore topics such as natural hazards, climate change, ecosystems, rivers, coasts, urbanisation, development, and resource management. Fieldwork includes a visit to Bridlington to explore the impacts of coastal erosion and tourism.

At A Level, students follow an issue-based course that allows for deeper exploration of key geographical themes, supported by four days of fieldwork to enhance their learning.

Our department is made up of five specialist geography teachers with diverse backgrounds in physical and human geography, geology, and environmental science. This breadth of expertise enriches our curriculum and supports our students’ success. Many of our students go on to study geography-related subjects at university and beyond.
