Admission from Primary School
In September 2023, students starting in King James’s Year 7 came from a total of 26 primary schools! In view of the large number of schools sending students to King James’s, Mrs Holdsworth, Assistant Head/Director of Key Stage 3, liaises between the Local Authority, the primary schools, parents and students to ensure that the procedures for application run smoothly.
Students in their final year of primary school and their parents are invited to visit the school on our Open Evening, which is held each year in early October. This provides an opportunity to get a feel for the school, meet staff and the Head, and visit departments.
Parents who would also like to view the school during a working day are most welcome to do so. To make an appointment, please contact Miss Key, Year 7 Learning Manager, at school.
Preference forms for applying to secondary school are sent out in October via primary schools. The preference forms are returned to the Area Education Office.
Parents who are considering moving into the area and have a child due to transfer to secondary school should contact the Area Education Office as well as the school.
Parents of children who live outside the area may also apply for admission to King James’s School. These applications will be considered after all in-area applications have been allocated.
Admission to Year 8 and Above
The Area Education Office is responsible for admissions to Years 8 and above.
If you would like to arrange a visit to the school, please contact the school & speak to Lisa Holdsworth, Assistant Head.
If a school is over-subscribed, the Area Education Office allocates places according to published criteria. Parents should refer to the booklet issued by the Area Education Office for more information.
Please note that King James’s School is consistently over-subscribed each year by first preference applications.
Parents whose children are refused a place at their first choice school by the Area Education Office may appeal against the decision. A form for this purpose is available from the Area Education Office.
